Banda and Chawinga sisters on African POTY shortlist
Two sets of sisters have been included in the list of nominees for the African Women’s Player of the Year award. Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga from Malawi, who both play professionally in Europe, have been recognized for their outstanding performances this year.
Joining them on the shortlist are the Banda sisters from Zambia, Barbra and Rachael, who have also had a stellar year on the international stage. The inclusion of two sets of sisters in the nominations highlights the growing talent and influence of African women in football.
Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for Wuhan Jianghan in China, has been particularly impressive, leading her team to success in both domestic and international competitions. Her younger sister Temwa, who plays for the Spanish club Madrid CFF, has also been a standout performer this year.
Barbra Banda, who recently joined the Chinese club Shanghai Shengli, has been a prolific goal scorer for both her club and the Zambian national team. Her sister Rachael, who plays for BIIK Kazygurt in Kazakhstan, has also been in top form this season.
The African Women’s Player of the Year award aims to celebrate the achievements of female footballers from across the continent. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in January next year, with the competition expected to be close given the high quality of the nominees.
Both sets of sisters expressed their excitement at being included in the shortlist and thanked their fans for their support throughout the year. They are all hopeful of taking home the prestigious award and continue to inspire young girls in Africa to pursue their dreams in football.
